Grammar at the Shops

There are a few problems with this notice. First, the plural form apparels is wrong, since the word apparel is uncountable in Standard English (for this reason we don’t normally say some flours or some milks).

Second, Less Up To 20% is a non-standard way of saying Up To 20% Less. The writer was probably translating directly from Chinese, using the word less as a verb (as in Mandarin kòu 扣).

Finally, I’d change regular priced items to regular-price items.

Hi, my name is Michael Setiawan (michaelsetiawan.blogspot.com). I really like the idea of Singlish as a "sexy" language. But, I would not say it is a good English language. Singapore needs to get some more people who know how to make Singlish better. I heard from the MoE of Singapore that Singapore would teach grammar than just focusing on communicative approach. Thank you.

Hi, Michael

Many thanks for your comments and the link to your very interesting blog. I'm not sure if it's realistic to 'make Singlish better', however -- like most languages, it came about spontaneously. Yes, since the 2001English Language Syllabus, there has been a greater focus on the explicit teaching of grammar -- this is even more so in the 2010 syllabus!

All the best

Hi, TGT.

It is interesting to discuss about the English language teaching in Singapore's schools. Do you mind telling me about the teaching and the 2001 and 2010 syllabus you mentioned before? I'm quite interested in those things. If you want to send it directly to my email, I'll be glad to tell you my email address. Hope we can have a discussion and some sharing about these things. Thank you.
